History

Hilltop Basic Resources, Inc was founded in 1941 by I.W. and Katherine D. Steele in Cincinnati, Ohio as a building material and ready mixed concrete, supply company.

In 1949, Hilltop Concrete expanded into the Dayton, Ohio market, and by the 50’s, had become the largest Ready Mixed Concrete producer in Ohio.

By 1960, the Steele family decided to focus on mining aggregates to support Hilltop Concrete. By 1965, Hilltop opened Patriot Sand & Gravel, which supplies Hilltop Concrete as well as other Ready Mixed Concrete customers.

In 1993, the 3rd generation of the Steele family, John Steele, Jr., was elected as President and Chief Executive Officer. Over the next decade, Hilltop continued our growth in Kentucky as we purchased two limestone quarries, a river distribution terminal and a Ready Mixed Concrete Plant.

In 2006, Hilltop opened a river distribution terminal in Aberdeen, Ohio and built a new Ready Mixed Concrete plant on the site. In 2019, Hilltop opened a new Ready Mixed Concrete plant on Mineola Pike in Northern Kentucky to provide greater service to development at the Greater Cincinnati International Airport and surrounding areas.

In 2020, Hilltop sold the terminal and Ready Mixed Concrete plant in Aberdeen Ohio and purchased Cincinnati Ready Mix Concrete Company in St. Bernard, Ohio expanding our geographic footprint further north in the core Cincinnati market.

Today we own and operate three quarries, three distribution terminals and three Ready Mixed Concrete plants, including the largest concrete plant in the region.

Stay tuned as we continue to write Hilltop’s history with some exciting new growth initiatives in 2023.
